Measles is still reigning over the US. There are several outbreaks that have infected people in as many as four states in the first 3 months of 2019. As per the new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as many as 387 cases have infected and covered as many as 15 states starting from 1st of Jan till the end of March.
While this year the number of reported cases is 387 the number of cases last year was a mere 372. This is as per the statistics that has been updated by the agency. It is also an updated figure as the statistics are updated on a weekly basis. As of now 6 outbreaks have occurred across as many as 4 states – New York, Washington, New Jersey and California.
This year the US seems to be one of the worst infected with measles since 2014. In the year 2000, the virus was eradicated from the US and since then this seems to be the second worst bout of Measles attack. One of the reasons attributed to this virus returning is the fact that many parents are not getting their kids vaccinated. Also, there are many tourists who are traveling from unvaccinated countries. In worst ever was the year 2014 when as many as 667 cases were reported to be infected with Measles.
At last many places like New York’s Rockland County has started taking strict steps to address the situation. They are actually banning unvaccinated children from visiting public places like malls, restaurants, places of worship and so on. There have been as many as 157 people who have been confirmed for measles who have never taken MMR vaccine- Mumps, Measles, and Rubella.
The Dean of New York University’s College of Global Public Health, Cheryl Healton said,
“It’s a carrot or a stick. They chose the stick. There’s a lot of evidence the carrot works better than when you use the stick, that’s why it’s not used. You can get a better response by appealing to people’s higher nature.”
